The first local people settled on Gili Trawangan over 200 years ago. Because of the plethora of fish and the freshwater present on the island, it made for a good home for the local ethnic communities. The people on the islands began to cultivate and grow crops while exchanging their products for goods from mainland Lombok.
When Bali began to grow as a tourist destination in the 20th century, the Gili Islands became an extension of many travel itineraries for the more culturally immersive experience offered there.
Gili Trawangan continued to develop for tourism as more and more travelers trickled in. Now, it is a popular travel destination for travelers of all kinds.
The Gili Islands are known for not having any cars or motorbikes. This is in part due to their small size.
All you need is your own two feet to get from one side of Gili Trawangan to the other. It won’t take you any more than 30 minutes - tops.
If you are a die-hard fan of wheels, you can always rent a bicycle and bike your way around the small tropical paradise and breathe in the fresh ocean air. In fact, we highly recommend you do this!
Prices for accommodation run between IDR 150,000 per night for a dorm room and up to IDR 10,000,000 per night for your own private villa - it depends on your budget. The options are endless but there is something for everyone! Whether you're looking for cheap, budget lodging like homestays, hostels, or bungalows or more exclusive upmarket cottages, villas, and hotels - the Gili Islands will accommodate you!
